Post Production Storyboards

These are my post production storyboards for my silent movies,
it was good to go back and reflect on what I had done. It made me realise places when not a lot goes on. In an ideal situation I would go back and change some parts.

Silent Movie..Drop 5

For my final silent movie I am creating the effect of the letters individually dropping and bouncing around the screen until they finally settle at the bottom of the shot,
I started by making each letter on it own layer on Photoshop,

I imported the files into After Effects, keeping them as compositions to make sure I can move them as individual layers,

I then created motion paths for the letters to follow so they gave the appearance of bouncing around the screen.

I want to work with each letter individually for this animation, I have made a Photoshop file and put each letter on a different layer.

Because I put each letter in its own layer it now means I can animated them separately,
when importing them in After Effect you ask to retain layers and not change it into footage
so they can be work with individually.

Silent Movie....Drop 3

I am using mattes for this silent animation movie, I have made my files on Illustrator and Photoshop to import into After Effects.

I am using the Matte to make it seem as if the word is being dropped down into shot and then drops out of shot again after.

I have also changed the key frames to rove across time so that they move at an equal and steady pace across the screen.

Silent Movie...Drop 2

This is my final animation for my second ideas for the Silent Movie brief, it still needs a bit of tweaking and smoothing out but this is the overall ideas.

Silent Move..Drop 2

For my second animation I am looking at changing the scale to make the word seem as if it is dropping down into view from above.

I tried my ideas with different fonts and weights but using these two meant that I had to un-center the text which meant when it dropped down it wasn't in the right place on the shot and parts were cut off, or even the whole word wasn't in view.

I found a font and weight that worked, Futura Bold, I also moved the letters closer together so that when it was scaled to its largest point their were minimal white spaces.

This is what I want my end shot to look like, with the word drop falling away into the distance.

Silent Movie...Drop

I started by making an outline of my type on Illustrator to copy and paste into After Effects.

I choose my background colour then applied a white solid on top of it, as that is the colour I wanted my mask to be so my text would be white on the cyan background.

My text dropped down into view, into the title safe zone. I then wanted the letters to drop down off the screen then the whole word to drop out of view.

Some improvements need to be made, the P drops down slightly after all the other letters which is not what I want to happen, but that is the main, overall idea done.

I went onto http://gickr.com/ and put my storyboards into GIFs to start to get an idea how they will start to move when they are out into After Effects, all these GIFs only have 5 key frames but from what I have learnt from before my After Effects animations will have more than that.

Time Line Workshop

(Insert images of work here)

We had a discussion about the pros and cons of working with time lines, somethings that kept coming up were the editing possibilities. Working with timelines gives you the option to visualise the storyboard and then move frames around if they don't work in the order they are in.
It gives you the skills to start thinking about your animation over time and how long each frame will last for and also to start thinking about the parts of the animation when nothing really happens.
It is also giving us time to devlop our drawing skills, we all need to have good enough drawing skills to show our ideas on paper in a clear way, its no good being a genious on a mac if you can't draw your ideas first.

Storyboard Crit

(insert images of work here)

We had a small crit in pairs on our storyboards we have drawn up, we had to look at each others and explain what we though was going on in each storyboard.
It made me realised what I had missed out in my storyboards, often things that were obvious once they had been pointed out.

Timeline Workshop

In todays workshop we started to look at timelines, when working off screen you always work in seconds, unlike when you are working on Afer Effects when you work in frames per second. When we started to work with timelines I suddenly realsied sometimes counting isn't as simple as I once thought!

We started by taking our screen grabs that we look at equal intervals throughout the piece of kinetic type we found, mine was 30 seconds long so I split mine equally every 1.2 seconds as it was a 60cm line which represented 30 seconds and I had 25 frames to fit in the time.

The next thing we did was to take our screen grabs that we look at moments we thought showed an important change in the video and mapped them out on a timeline. This was a lot harder because the screen grabs were not taken at regular intervals.

We have been asked to answer some questions based on what we ahve learnt in this session:

-What is a key frame?

Storyboards-Collide/Drop

I was asked to have 5 ideas and for each idea have 5 variations of this idea and each idea consists of 5 frames, these are my ideas I have come up with, I now need to start focusing on them in more detail, looking at key frames with in the animations.

Storyboard Workshop

We started off by trying to represent our word with one letter within one frame.

We then went on to represent our words over 5 frames, the the first sheet we couldn't move the position of the letters.
The second one we could change the position and scale but not format.
