Final Boards

These are my final 6 boards ready for submission, my 4 main briefs have been printed out and the Neon Cactus and Tigerprint brief are just going to be submitted in PDF format.

Briefs

These are my 4 main briefs and below are two smaller briefs that
I have worked on during this module, one is a live brief and the other
a competition brief.

Cookbooks Online/Instore

 These are my product range mocked up in a window display
 and on the Waterstones website.
This is how I propose the product would be seen and sold in 
the real world.
 I will use these final images on my boards to show the distribution
 of my product range.

Cookbooks in Context

 In the same way as the stationary brief I needed that my cookbooks into context,
I propose that my product to be sold order stones online and in-store and as individual products and is part of wider range.
I products will also be sold on the Penguin online shop as they are based on the Penguin awards brief and I propose that they would be published by Penguin.
 The same as before I'm going to mockup all since website and shopfront to show how my products would be displayed.

Photographing Final Products

 Kirsty and I rented out some photography equipment to photograph our final products ready to go on our boards.  we had had a photography induction the week before so we knew how to use all the equipment.
These are the best images of all my final products that I am going to use on my final boards, it was good to learn how to use all the equipment properly as a photograph can make or break a product.

Bookmarks

Another part of the cookbook range is bookmarks, there is 
ont to go with each of the books and would be given away free
with the purchase of each of the books.
They are printed on the same stock as the postcards
with the names and authors of the books printed on 
the top.

Postcards

Another part of the cookbook range that I designed was postcards, one for 
each of the cookbooks, they would be sold as a set, printed on bulky white newsprint,
double sided, with the name and author of the cookbook on the reverse.

Tote Bags

I also thought about the bags that would be given to customers that 
purchased the cookbooks.
The books are quite big and heavy so I thought about using tote bags,
the customers could pick which one they wanted and they would
receive it free with their book.
I heat transfered the pattern on to the bag but they pattern could be
screenprinted on.

Notebooks

To expand the range to go along side my cookbook brief I thought
about the other products that could be made. One of the products I 
have made for the cookbook range is notebooks. The fronts are the illustrations
from each of the cookbooks, printed on the same off white sugar paper stock.
They could be for people to write their own notes about the recipes from each of
the cook books, they could be bought individually or sold as part of the set.

Dust Jacket Print

This is the final printed out version of the dust jacket for the cookbook 
brief. 
I have printed onto off white sugar paper as after testing out the
different stocks
this is the one that worked the best with the colours and style
of the illustrations.
The cover includes the book title and author on the front and the
ISBN number, barcode and Penguin logo on the back.
I am proposing that the other information that is usually found
on book covers like the blurb and reviews/quotes would be printed
on the book itself underneath the dust jacket.

'The International Standard Book Number (ISBN) is a unique
 numeric commercial book identifier based upon the 9-digit
 Standard Book Numbering (SBN) code created by Gordon Foster,
 Emeritus Professor of Statistics at Trinity College, Dublin, for
 the booksellers and stationers W. H. Smith and others in 1965.'

When designing my book covers I was looking at existing books
 to see what was needed,
all books have a unique ISBN number which is normally written
 above the barcode.

Cookbook Typefaces

Along with the images that I have spent a good amount of time on 
I also needed to decide on a typeface to use that would work across the range, because
I wanted to keep it consistent and also work with the illustrations.
I thought that a sans serif typeface would work the best, these are a few different ones
I tried out, I am going to apply them to each of the books and see what works best 
across them all.

Cookbook Stock Decisions

I had doen the illustrations and lay out for the cookbook covers but 
I hadn't given any consideration yet to the stock that it would be printed on.
I first printed out a black and white image and wrapped it around a book to get 
an idea of size and dimensions. The text was to large and too close to the edges 
of the front of the book when I first printed it so I went back to re-sized the
text on the front and also decreased the size of the barcode and logo on the
reverse.
I tried the covers on white stock, a cream and grey card and off white sugar paper,
I also tried the text in black and different shades of grey.
The black text was too harsh on most of the stocks so I went with grey, dark enough that it could be clearly read over the images.
The images also worked best on the off white sugar paper, the colours of the
illustrations complimented best with the stock and it was also the right weight 
for a dust jacket and folded easily.

Cookbook Layouts

These are my 5 cookbooks that are complete and ready to print,
I have kept the text minimal because these are just the dust jackets and 
I have proposed that the text would be written on the cover underneath.
I have added a barcode and an isbn number and the Penguin logo.
I am going to try printing them on different stocks and see how the the size
of the text comes out.

Dust Jacket

I need to make up my dust jackets for my cookbooks,
so I used a already
existing one to work out the dimensions of my own.

Cookbook Illustrations

I have started putting the illustrations together for the front of 
my cookbooks. I still need to do some more illustrations for the other
books but this is an idea of the patterns I am going to use.
I now also need to work on the text and layout, deciding on a typeface
and the format of the books.

Cookbook Illustrations

I coloured my images with watercolour paints and scanned them back into the computer,
I was finding the digital colours to harsh and unnatural and didn't really work with 
the illustrations. I much prefer these painted images.
I am not going to start working with them in relation to my cookbook layouts
and start adding type ready for print on Monday.

Cookbook Illustrations

I have started my illustrations for my cookbooks, I have looked at the 
content of each cookbook and done illustrations relevants to that.
I am going to put them into Illustrator and work colour into them.
