Communication is a Virus-Final Presentation

This is our final powerpoint presentation that we had put together when presenting out work to the rest of the group in our final crit. This was the first time some people in our class had heard what we had done. I think the presentation went well and Niall even gave them a little performance as Oliver Histon.
I feel that overall we had a strong concept and did manage to "Tell a lie convincingly" as Niall did a excellent job of fooling the 2nd years. As we did not manage to get video footage of Nialls presentation we had to rely on filming the reactions of the 2nd years after they had found out what had just happened. Here is the video of that-

As a group I think we worked well and really enjoyed the project as it was different to what we normally do, we had fun with this brief which I think is really important, if your not enjoying your work you loose interest in it.

Communication is a Virus-Nialls Script

Niall put together this script which he will be working from in the presentation to the second years. We all decided to head to the sound booth too see how it worked with his accent.
Hello I’m Ollie…

And I’m here today to give you a brief talk about my work and my graphic design world…

I’m a little nervous so bare with me,

Right, a little about me, I’ve already said I’m Ollie, I went to the University of Brighton and I graduated 4 years ago and I have worked free lance ever since leaving.

When I first left university I did a few internships one for (insert GD firm) & (insert GD firm), I can only tell you that internships and placements are an amazing opportunity, even if its just making tea and coffee, just being in and around the environment of a design studio brilliant forum for you to express your ideas and absorb other peoples.

Once my internships finished, I unfortunately was not taken on and given a job.
But I made a few good friends at the companies and someone put my name forward as an up and coming designer to a German company Befreien Sie Entwurf, that roughly translates at free design, so in the summer of 2007 I packed my bags for 4months to the small German town of Fellbach about 25min drive from Stuttgart, where the studio was, and these are just a few pieces of work we did over there for a German music festival.

When I came back I suffered a bit of culture shock after living the German way of life for the past four months, I was approached by Nike UK to come with some posters for once of there campaigns.

So I went from working for a small firm in Germany in a studio with balding German men to working freelance for the UK arm of one of the biggest corporations in the world. This was a big eye opener to me showing how versatile a graphic designer needs to be. Especially if your working freelance because you have to adapt yourself from client to client and some clients are very stubborn and give you little room for manoeuvre.

But anyway this is the work I produced while at Nike. This experience was a great springboard for me opening a few doors and getting me a load more clients..

Communication is a Virus-Plan of Action!

The final plan of action is that we try and fool the 2nd years,  Amber will be teaching a group of 2nd years on Thursday afternoon, in which Niall will be sitting in, giving the second years general advice and also giving a 15-20 minute talk. Hopefully none of them will really question whether it looks like Niall but it is down to Niall proving himself with his acting skills. Hopefully because the 2nd years don't see Niall as much as our year do they won't recognise him.

The website is now complete and Niall could look at showing this to the 2nd years whilst talking about his work. His final outfit and disguise has also been finalised so quite excited to see how Niall looks on Thursday. Will also have to convince the rest of the group that Niall is ill and that is why he hasn't come into college.

The main point behind the project is to understand how aware people actually are and whether they take note of their surroundings and the people that they're spending time with. It will be interesting to see how observant the 2nd years really are.

Business Card Ideas

Once we had decided on the identity of Oliver Histon being the letters OH I started designing some layouts for business cards, I experimented with colour, I feel that brighter colours work better especially with the word OH, being slighty in your face and shocking.

Communication is a Virus-Website Design

Basic ideas for website layout design.

We created a website for our character Oliver Histon using http://www.wix.com, we used the logo we designed and put up work that we claimed that 'Oliver Histon' had designed but which we really 'borrowed' from an already existing designer.

Communication is a Virus-Creating a character profile

Oliver Histon // 27
University of Brighton graduate
Freelance designer

CHARACTER PROFILE : In a long term relationship with Lindsay (aged 22)
Met through a client whilst working down south. His girlfriend is also an
artist however she works with textiles. He has a cat called Paul.
He uses aquafresh toothpaste.
His favourite food is sweet potato and broccoli.
He plays bass guitar, been playing for around 4 years.
His favourite band is Radiohead, favourite song is paranoid android, because
of the bass solo.
His dad is a joiner and his mum is a nurse.
HOBBIES : Mountain biking. Supports Hibernium FC and tries to go whenever he
can if he isn't busy.
Favourite film is Trainspotting.

This is the character profile we have created for Niall, we thought if we created a character in detail it would help Oliver Histon to be more believable as an actual person.

Crit Feedback

We had a crit with Jo, we discussed how we had began to develop the website and had decided on a logo for the creative identity of 'Oliver Histon' which is the letters OH. We were unsure as to whether we were going each create pieces of work for the online portfolio but when we discussed this with Jo she decided it would be better to use found work as this website wouldn't be shown to anyone outside of Univeristy and it would be easier and more beliveable. Jo also mentioned creating a real character profile Niall, (Oliver) looking into just what type of a person he is is he married, where does he live, where does he work, what are his likes and interests, what type of designer is he? Typographer, illustrator..

We came to the conclusion that instead of just fooling the 3rd years with portfolio surgeries that 'Oliver' will now be giving a talk to all years possibly in studio 4. By giving a talk to all years it makes the project more of a challenge as the 1st and 2nd years share a studio with Niall so it is likely that they will recognise Niall much easier. It also means we can test just how observant the audience are, or whether they really are gullible.

Communication is a Virus- Creating Oliver Histon

We started to create the character Oliver Histon, we purchased some fake hair so Niall could have a beard, we also got some contact lenses as Niall has very blue eyes which could possibly give him away. He is also going to dye his hair from blonde to brown and we are going to go to charity shops to find some appropriate clothes for Niall to wear, here are some photos of Niall experimenting with his Oliver Histon look.

Character Devleopment

I brainstormed some ideas for Nialls character, we feel that the more we create about his life and personality the more Niall will be able to get into character and the more beliveable he will be as Oliver Histon.
Niall did some drawings of how Oliver Histon could possibly look.

Oliver Histon Logo Designs

My design sheets for logo ideas of Oliver Histon.
Our groups ideas collected together for logo designs for Oliver Histon.

Communication is a Virus-Presentation Boards

Our plan is to tell a convincing lie, so convincing that we are not telling anyone about it, its all a secret. We are going to create and develop a character who is going to pretend to be a visiting lecturer and give the 2nd or 3rd years a talk and see if we can fool them.

Communication is a Virus-Tell a Convincing Lie

These are our design boards for our actual idea which is tell a convincing lie, we brainstormed possibly wasys to tell a lie, but we had to do this in secret as we are not telling people what we are doing because its all part of being able to tell a convincing lie.
